Child Safe Readiness Review

Illustration of four different sports balls in teal color.

A targeted review to help your organisation identify priority gaps, strengthen child safe systems and take practical next steps.

A Child Safe Readiness Review is designed for organisations that want an independent check of selected child safety documents, reporting pathways and implementation priorities without undertaking a full organisational audit.

Focus Child Safety provides clear, practical feedback to help your organisation understand what is working well, where improvements may be needed and what actions should be prioritised.

What this service is

This service is a lighter-touch review designed to support implementation of Queensland’s Child Safe Standards.

It is not a full organisational audit. Instead, it focuses on selected areas of your child safe framework so your organisation can identify practical improvements and strengthen systems in a manageable way.

A readiness review can be useful when your organisation wants to:

  • understand whether key child safety documents are clear and practical
  • check whether reporting pathways are easy to follow
  • identify priority gaps before updating policies or procedures
  • understand what needs attention before external review, accreditation or board reporting
  • strengthen implementation without committing to a full audit process
  • receive independent, practical feedback from a child safety specialist

What can be reviewed

A Child Safe Readiness Review can be tailored to your organisation’s needs, size, sector and risk profile.

The review may include selected areas such as:

  • Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
  • Child Safe Code of Conduct
  • child safety reporting forms and flowcharts
  • complaints handling procedures
  • recruitment and screening documents
  • suitability declarations and referee check processes
  • child safe interview questions
  • risk management strategy and risk register
  • reportable conduct policy and procedure
  • staff induction or training materials
  • website child safety information
  • governance or board reporting documents
  • implementation priorities and next steps

Service options

Option 1: Document Readiness Review

Best for organisations that want selected child safety documents reviewed for clarity, alignment and practical use.

This may include review of policies, procedures, templates, reporting tools or website content.

Good for:
Small organisations, clubs, services with existing policies, or organisations that want to update documents before publishing or approving them.

Option 2: Framework Readiness Review

Best for organisations that want a broader review of their child safe framework, including how key documents work together.

This may include review of child safety policies, codes of conduct, reporting pathways, complaints handling, recruitment and screening, risk management and reportable conduct procedures.

Good for:

Schools, faith-based organisations, community services and organisations with multiple staff or volunteer roles.

Option 3: Implementation Readiness Review

Best for organisations that have documents in place but want to understand whether they are practical, visible and likely to be used in day-to-day operations.

This may include review of policies, reporting pathways, staff guidance, training approach, induction content, communication processes and practical implementation steps.

Good for:
Organisations preparing to roll out updated child safety documents, brief staff or report progress to leadership or governance groups.

Review process

1. Scope: We agree on the documents, systems or priority areas to be reviewed.

2. Documentation Collection: Your organisation provides the selected policies, procedures, templates or supporting materials.

3. Review: Focus Child Safety reviews the selected materials against Queensland’s Child Safe Standards, relevant guidance and practical implementation considerations.

4. Feedback: You receive clear feedback on strengths, gaps and opportunities for improvement.

5. Next Steps: You receive practical, prioritised recommendations to help your organisation strengthen its child safe systems.

What you receive

Depending on the agreed scope, your organisation may receive:

  • a targeted readiness summary
  • identification of key strengths and priority gaps
  • practical recommendations for improvement
  • suggested updates to selected documents or processes
  • guidance on implementation priorities
  • optional follow-up consultation to discuss findings
  • optional support with policy development, training or advisory next steps

Who this is for

A Child Safe Readiness Review may be suitable for:

  • organisations that are unsure whether their current documents are adequate
  • services that have policies in place but need practical feedback
  • boards or leaders seeking a clearer picture of child safety priorities
  • organisations preparing to update their child safe framework
  • organisations that want focused support without a full audit
  • schools, NDIS providers, sporting clubs, faith-based organisations, community groups and child-related services
  • organisations preparing for external review, accreditation or Reportable Conduct Scheme

Who this is not for

A Child Safe Readiness Review is not a full organisational audit, certification process or legal review.

It does not provide a formal assurance opinion or guarantee compliance. Instead, it provides practical, independent feedback to help your organisation identify priority improvements and strengthen implementation.

If your organisation requires legal advice, formal accreditation or a comprehensive external audit, you may need additional specialist support.

How this connects to other services

A readiness review often helps organisations identify what to do next.

Depending on your needs, Focus Child Safety can also support your organisation with:

  • Child Safe Framework Template Packs
  • policy and procedure development
  • document tailoring and redrafting
  • child safety training and workshops
  • leadership or board briefings
  • advisory support
  • reportable conduct readiness
  • risk register or reporting pathway support

Need a clearer picture of your child safe systems?

If your organisation wants focused, practical feedback without undertaking a full audit, a Child Safe Readiness Review can help identify priority gaps and next steps.
